Grand Island Harbor Front Range Lighthouse

The Grand Island Harbor Front Range Light, also known as the Bay Furnace Range Light, is located just off M-28 near the town of Christmas, about 4.5 miles west of Munising in Michigan’s Alger County. Built in 1867, this 20-foot steel tower once worked in tandem with a Rear Range Light situated 50 yards inland on the opposite side of the highway. Together, these lights helped guide vessels safely into Grand Island Harbor. Today, both lights are inactive, but the Front Range Light remains easily accessible via a short hiking trail that leads to the Lake Superior shoreline. During summer months, the Hiawatha National Forest occasionally offers free tours of the Rear Range Light, though availability varies by season. For more information, contact the Munising Ranger District.

The Grand Island Harbor Front Range Light, built in 1867, now stands quietly along the shore near Christmas, Michigan.
