Historic Lighthouses Of Alger county

From historic beacons to rugged shoreline towers, Munising’s lighthouses capture the maritime charm of Lake Superior. Whether you’re hiking, cruising, or exploring by car, these lights tell the story of sailors, storms, and shipwrecks past.

A scenic trail within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore leads to this towering 1870s light. With keeper’s quarters and original buildings on-site, it’s a favorite stop for hikers, history buffs, and photographers alike.

This rustic wooden lighthouse from 1868 is a Lake Superior favorite, known for its weathered charm. Though not open to the public, it’s best viewed from the water on a boat tour.

Part of the historic Bay Furnace Range Lights, the Rear Light sits just off M-28 in the woods near Christmas. Though inactive, the site is open and occasionally toured in summer.

Located right off M-28, this 58-foot active light aligns with the Rear Range Light to mark a safe path through the East Channel. The tower is closed, but the site and surrounding park buildings are open year-round.

Tucked into a forested hillside, this 33-foot white tower works with its front range counterpart to guide boats into Munising Bay. The site is open to visitors, though the tower itself is closed.

Perched atop a 175-foot cliff on Grand Island, this restored brick lighthouse from 1867 offers dramatic views from the water. It’s privately owned and not open to the public, but boat tours offer great photo ops.

Sitting right along the beach near Christmas, this 20-foot steel light helped guide ships into harbor with its rear range partner. It’s easy to access via a short trail and is great for a quick shoreline stop.

Just off H-58, these two active towers from the late 1800s still help guide ships today. Visit the Light Keeper’s House Museum and view both the Inner and Outer lights from the nearby shoreline.
