The Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse stands along the southeastern shore of Grand Island, just north of Munising in Michigan’s Alger County. Built in 1868 from wood, this 45.9-foot-tall lighthouse once helped guide vessels through the East Channel into Munising Harbor. Due to poor visibility from the lake and difficult maintenance, the light was retired in the early 1900s after the Munising Range Lights were introduced. Though no longer active, the lighthouse remains a beloved local landmark and a favorite among photographers for its weathered, rustic appearance. The structure is privately owned and not open to the public, but it can be viewed by boat via Pictured Rocks Cruises and Shipwreck Tours departing from Munising. Thanks to community fundraising and the Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse Rescue Committee, preservation efforts have kept this wooden treasure standing strong against time and erosion.
