Au Sable Light Station

Located within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the Au Sable Light Station sits on the south shore of Lake Superior, about 12 miles west of Grand Marais, Michigan. Constructed between 1873 and 1874, the white brick tower stands 86 feet tall and is anchored 23 feet into bedrock. It originally housed a third-order Fresnel lens, casting a fixed white beam visible up to 17 miles across the lake. Surrounding the tower are several historic structures, including the original keeper’s quarters, a fog signal building, and an oil house built in the 1890s. In 1909, new living quarters were added to accommodate multiple families, reflecting the station’s long history of continuous staffing—first by civilian keepers, and later by the U.S. Coast Guard until automation in 1958. Today, a solar-powered light shines from the tower’s catwalk, and the site is managed by the National Park Service.
